Dayton 2010-DX/Contest Dinners were Memorable

Got to meet KL7RA, VU2PAI, and VQ9LA...and many others. I walked by a table and as we all do glance at call sign badges. I stopped when I saw KL7 Radio Alaska! About 8 or 9 years ago I set up a JOTA station at a local catholic church picnic area for the 40 or so scouts there. That afternoon on 15m I was called by a very loud KL7RA. I thought he was in CF not Alaska. He said I had a great signal up there and he had been listening and going back to when he was a scout in Bossier City-while his dad was stationed @ Barksdale. Said he remembered getting his swimming merit badge on Lake Bisteneau, and was it still there and a lake you could swim in.
He then told me he was testing out his 4(yes 4) stacked array of yagi's on a 100' tower for SS.
Needless to say his great sig, and this qso was a real show stopper for scouts and parents alike there that afternoon. He told me he remembered the qso like yesterday..
VU2PAI was my first India on 17m, phone and cw ever-qso only 2 mo or so ago. He kinda remembered it, as La not often worked on 17m. (Said QSL for sure!) I mentioned he and VQ9La were the "voice of the Indian Ocean"..He responded "he is here also-met him 30' away 2 min later! GREAT!

Contesting
I had planned on being at K1TTT's station for this week-end's running of the ARRL DX Phone contest, but instead I am here at the home front getting some work done.

Family
Had a recent scare with a visit to the local emergency room with my wife
when I say scary, I mean it. Zo had a very bad alleric reaction to a new drug she was subscribed. I am glad I called 911 fast, as soon as we knew she was having a reaction (just the itching and rash had begun) by the time they got here she was in dire straits, heart trouble, bearly comontose. An IV and 20mg of benadryl and she was stable, but not out of the woods yet.

I am very thankful she is doing fine now.
We now have an epi pen that we keep close by.

Those that know me and anyone that has been to my station knows how much support I get from my wife in everything I do
She is truely the wind beneath my wings.

Accolades
To me the greatest reward ever is to be recognized by one's peers
at a recent luncheon someone mentioned that they saw kg5vk
in a listing of recent nominee's for membership in the A-1 Operators club
I swear my jaw must have dropped when I heard this
just a nomination to this elite group means a great amount to me
While there is yet no certificate and the nomination may never be seconded I wanted to say Thank You !!!

New computer
I hate breaking in a new CPU or more to the point new software oo even more poignant Operating System
Windows XP Pro was good and stable and it worked with just about everything we hams use, without jumping thru hoops to get things to talk to each other.
Well I am breaking in a new windows 7 machine, life is challenging at times !

Dayton 2010
Randy K5SL and I will be flying to Dayton this year by way of a side trip to the Wright Pat AFB Muesum
this should be a load of fun
I have not been to Dayton since the 80's when Zo and I lived in Indiana
We have dinner reservations at the Contest Dinner Banquet and may also attend the DX Dinner.
I look forward to seeing some old friends and making lots of new ones during the hospitality suite visits

The Big Contest is this week-end
My best effort in any contest without a doubt has to be First Place Europe in the 1981 running of the ARRL DX Phone contest
My self and a few friends, did a MM from N2BVJ/LX and the Luxembourg club
station LX0RL
This was my first ever Wooden Plaque award, thanks to the members of the Grosse Point Farms DX Association for their sponsorship of that really nice plaque !

I am ready to play big time in this contest again

It's not really DX unless it's worked on the air....

I agree it is not really a DX contact unless it's worked thru the air wave from one end of the QSO to the other, in other no links or repeaters

But today with many Ham's stuck in no antenna zoning, or just no antenna resources
D-Star and even Echo link allow them to enjoy our hobby

While no D-Star or Echo link contact will ever get a QSL card from me
many still enjoy it and I do use the mode occasionally

Fact is there are so many aspects of enjoying Ham Radio we often find the local 2 meter repeaters with little or no activity, esp compared to the level of activity we saw in the 70's and 80's

College Special Event

Hello,
To celebrate our college turning 98 years old this month, our student
amateur radio club N9GTC is running a Special Events station. The bulk
of the club is made up of non-hams working on their technician license.
(Most of the licensed club members graduated this past May.) As the
club adviser, I will be present during the Special Event operating time
so that all of the club members can get on the air. This is our
opportunity as a contesting community to show a group of technician
class (and soon to be technician class) operators what great fun
amateur radio is.

Our operating plans are;

Thursday, Oct 29, 1400Z-1800Z, SSB, 21.275 14.275 7.275.

Friday, Oct 30, 1400Z-1800Z, CW, 21.080 14.080 7.080.

They asked if we could do cw as well. I plan to load the exchanges in
the keyer and "translate" for them. Imagine that, some of them are
interested in cw...

If you have some time, please stop by the freq. and say hello to our
students. Imagine if you were a non-ham working on your license what an
experience like this could do to boost your enthusiasm. Some of the
college's administration will be stopping by to participate in the event
as well as they are big supporters of the club.

I hope you can stop by the frequency and say "hello". We will send out
a beautiful color certificate to all those that make it into the log.

2009 running of ARRL Phone Sweepstakes

I am getting the station and antenna farm ready
for the ARRL Sweepstakes Contest, for years I have hosted
several ops here at my qth for a multi-op effort in this fun contest

The phone version of the contest is
2100Z, Nov 21(Saturday afternoon) to 0300Z, Nov 23 (Sunday evening)

I know of several ops that will be here are you one of them ???

Progress on the New Four Square..........

The 75m Four Square is now finished

and...........

Just finished the new 4 square
the last part was to run the coax from the phasing box to the shack that measures dumped power
It was the most rewarding part as the good news is the system has at least 91 % efficiency
of transmit power out to the vertical
iow less than 9 % is dumped power back to the dummy load
because of inefficient coupling of the phased verticals !

I understand anything less than 10% dumped power is good.
at 3.640mhz the system is even more efficient (96%) less than 4% dumped power

It transmits apparently really well
but I think we will still be using beverages or the K9AY loop for receive and i have some work to do on those to improve our signal to noise ratios (I have been reading and studying the methods for this) Mainly decoupling the feedline from the rcv antenna system
and use of a second ground system away from the feed point

At least one amateur has been complaining to the FCC since 2000 regarding harmful radio interference possibly caused by power line equipment that is maintained by Pittsburgh's Duquesne Light Company (DLC)."

Station on Fort Worden's Artillery Hill Refurbished; Hams Have Celebration:: "The radio station atop Artillery Hill at Fort Worden State Park is the site of a special event celebrating the 100th anniversary of this communications site. The celebration takes place from 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30. The public is invited to stop by during the park's open hours: 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m. on Saturday and 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Using call sign W7R, members of the local Jefferson County and Port Ludlow Amateur Radio clubs will be on the air for the full 32 hours in the original brick building, completed in 1909, which is located on the fort's Artillery Hill, surrounded by the original gun batteries. In the early 1900s, this station, using call sign FX, was used by the U.S. Army to communicate with Alaska, supporting the Klondike Gold Rush, using a spark-gap transmitter. In the early 1930s, communication was by voice, code and Teletype, using an SCR radio set with a 300-foot wire antenna with a center tap supported by two 150-foot fir poles. During this weekend's event, radio "hams" will be operating off-grid, on single side band, CW (Morse code), and digital PSK & RTTY modes. Radio frequencies include 14.265 and 7.255 MHz. I remember a lot of discussion (about three years ago) about huge friend files for cw and voice macros that most decided use of macros just slowed our rates down too much so after further thought I think this simple pop up window makes more since

Of course we could use the traditional Friend file as the big file and a MyFriend.ini file as the true my "select' friends if we instruct wl and the wlfriend programs to look for the data in the right places !

First off you must be connected to a "CC" Cluster such as VE7CC-1.
Click on the "Country" tab.
Click the "NA" bullet.
In the "Band" section click the "ALL" bullet.
Click the "Spotter Country" bullet.
Click the "Clear" button.
Put a check in the "K" and the "VE" check boxes.
Click the "Tell Cluster" Button.
You should now only receive spots from US and VE stations.

While preparing for this year I look back at what happened in last year's ARRL SS Phone Contest

Last year we had a false start with some equipment problems that kept us off the air for the first hour.

The First hour or two are always the most intense in a contest and very true in Sweepstakes.
Rick AE5T and His Son N5OZB beat us out of first place in the state as well as our ARRL Division by just over one hundred Q's (106 q's to be exact)

So we were right on their heels !
A good hour and a half with a Q rate of 90 or more an hour and we could have maintained our status in First place in State and Division

Things were a bit more competitive for the region box...........

Foremost we still maintained showing in this Box
however we fell from 2006 fourth place to fifth , still a respectable finish

Again look at how close this race was !!!

Is attendance at a contest operation worth your time ?

Even if your not an HF op

There is a lot that non HF ops can do during the contest
but the most important thing is to come and have fun !

Things to do during an HF contest if you either do not want to operate or are just not sure if your fast enough or a proficient HF op......

Monitor the bands on The Multi-Op finder rig
looking for band openings and needed multipliers
In sweepstakes there are 80 multipliers available and the team is eligible for the prestigious Sweepstakes mugs once we work all of those multipliers
(In SS The multipliers are ARRL and Canadian Sections for example many states are divided into several ARRL sections) A couple of the hardest sections to work over recent years has been Alaska and North West Terittory (in Canada)

There will also be periods where the contact rate falls way below 60 -90 QSO's per hour !
and even ops that are not fast or real proficient get to work the rigs alongside a more experienced contester (many dedicated contesters including myself started by watching and learning this way)

Several ops show up just for a few hours to watch us dedicated contesters run the rate count whay up over 100 conteacts per hour, visit the antenna farm and tour the shack just before the contest starts or simply enjoy the wide range of "Contest Ala Gourmier Food" we have on hand

One word of caution......
Contesting is an addictive sport !

Coming up next on the contest calendar is the Ohio QSO Party, this coming
Saturday, August 23, from 1600z to 0400z August 24 (noon to midnight EDT). OQP
is sponsored by the Mad River Radio Club.

With there being five weekends in August this year, we are blessed with a
weekend largely to ourselves, sharing only with the Hawaii QSO Party. Not RTTY
contests, no European contests, no VHF contests. Those come the following
weekend.

For you skimmer fans out there, here is your opportunity to test things
under real contest conditions. OQP already allows packet for single ops, so
adding a skimmer into the mix is no problem. 20 KHz of bandwidth will cover 99%
of the CW activity, so there will be less of a processing requirement. See
how well you (or your skimmer) can find those usually weak mobiles stations as
they move from county to county.

A note for the left coasters: we now award a plaque to the top station in
the Mountain or Pacific time zones. So being out of range for the daytime 40
meter activity will not leave you out in the cold for one of our beautiful
plaques.

Visitors to Ohio are welcome! If you are anywhere close by, drive on over
and do a mobile or rover effort.

It's is good to be home

We are now home from our ten day trip to Atlanta (to photograph Pools for Blue Haven Pools) and Huntsville where we attended one of The Best Ham Fest www.Hamfest.org

I am now sitting in front of Two Ft-1000MP's and feel like I am in Ham Radio Operator Heaven
but of course I will now need to add more filters to my old friend (the Ft-1000MP which I have owned for some time before adding the newest one) is not as populated with filters as the new one is !

Had a ton of fun in Huntsville and am already making plans to go back next year.

I will be spending more time on cw, playing with Skimmer tools
of which Rick K4TD did an excellent presentation on at Huntsville
His presentation went beyond just what the tool (skimmer) is
but how to manage all that data without being overloaded and unable to make good choices with it (the data given to us during a contest from Skimmer)

The Louisiana Contest Club was formally organized at the Leesville, LA
hamfest. Present at the organizational meeting and signing of the club
constitution and by-laws were the charter members Charlie Morrison, KI5XP;
Roland Guidry, NA5Q; Pat Sonnier, W5WMU; Mark Ketchell, K5ER; and Scott
Dickson, W5WZ. Also present were Louisiana Section Manager Gary Stratton
K5GLS; and Louisiana Affiliated Club Coordinator Jim Bookner, N5NVP.



The Louisiana Contest Club is a special purpose amateur radio club devoted
to the pursuit of operating and technical excellence. Our goals are simple:

--To promote the fun, satisfaction and competitive thrill of radio
contesting

--To assist our members in the development of their operating and technical
skills

--To foster increased friendly competition and sportsmanship

--To become a competitive force in club competition of amateur radio
contests



The newly elected officers are: President- Mark Ketchell K5ER;
Vice-President- Charlie Morrison KI5XP; Secretary/Treasurer- Scott Dickson
W5WZ; Director- Pat Sonnier W5WMU; and Director- Roland Guidry NA5Q.



The idea of organizing a contest club originated at the 2008 Dayton
Hamvention in the contest super suite over pizza. The original founders of
LCC felt that an organization was needed in Louisiana to educate, promote
and encourage contesting. Further, they recognized that Louisiana had never
been represented by a statewide contest club. Among Louisiana hams, there
are many recognized and skilled Amateur Radio operators, some who have won
many national and world contesting awards. Through the LCC, we will provide
a vehicle for its membership to further develop contesting skills and
strategies, while allowing members to share collective knowledge and
experience through mentoring.



The LCC has chosen to mark the center of its circle near Marksville, LA at
coordinates N31.226894 Latitude and W91.944580 Longitude. This circle
INCLUDES ALL of Louisiana except the very tip of the Mississipi River delta.
It will also include the following population centers in neighboring states:

Lufkin TX

Greenville MS

Vicksburg MS

Natchez MS

Jackson MS

Hattiesburg MS

Eldorado AR

Magnolia AR



All persons interested in amateur radio contesting shall be eligible to
submit an application for membership. Membership shall be by application and

1st Annual Sunny South Contest Hospitality Suite

To all contest enthusiast in the South East:

Aug 15th Friday evening the ACG, SECC and TCG will be sponsoring the " 1st Annual Sunny South Contest Hospitality Suite" at the downtown Huntsville, AL Holiday Inn in the MIlltown Room from 7:00 -11:00 PM. Cash bar, snacks , pile-up competition (CW and SSB) and few demonstrations are currently on the evening's agenda. There are prizes for the top pile-up ops also. Passed away early this afternoon July 10, 2008

He was a consummate professional photographer, a dear friend,
and one that gave to all he met

He played drums at many churches using music as a method to reach youngsters in need of some guidance

He loved the challenge of DX and Contesting too
he worked several sweepstakes contests with the group
he was always light hearted and enjoyed the chase as well as the camaraderie

He served as our ARRL Emergency Coordinator
and worked with anyone regardless of club or affiliation

He spent a lot of time attempting to help me mend fences between local Ham clubs

He will be missed by many !

I know in my heart he is now with God
but our community has lost one great person
He was 38 years old.

Radio Sport HF Contest one of the short ones that are way too fun

HF Contesting usually hits a dry spell during the summer months, but the
weekend of July 12-13 brings a summer bright spot for HF contesters --
the IARU HF World Championship.

According to ARRL Contest Branch Manager Sean Kutzko, KX9X, the IARU
contest is a little different from most major HF contests. "For
starters, it's only 24 hours long (instead of the normal 48). This
leaves you plenty of time over the weekend to have fun in the contest
and participate in other activities. Another difference is that you can
combine modes. While most HF contests are either CW or SSB, IARU allows
you to operate CW, SSB or a mixture of both. Lastly, the IARU contest
exchange is a signal report and your ITU zone." ITU zones are different
than CQ zones, Kutzko said. For a map of ITU zones, you can visit the
IARU Web site <http://www.iaru.org/ituzonesc.gif>.

listed in the LCARC database.

Additionally, for those users with Kenwood TM-V71A and TM-D710's, I've
taken that file and converted into the Kenwood HMK file format for
uploading into the radio. Information about that is available from
Kenwood's site, and the file is located on the Kenwood Yahoo Group at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TM-D710_TM-V71/ Its also a free file,
available to anyone who joins the Kenwood group.

Overall we had 105 Qs deducted from our ARRL SS Phone 2007 effort

Bottom line is we did really well, although not first in State or Section
We did maintain placement in the region box by 5 place.
We did acquire and keep our Sweep !
We had a whole lot of fun !
